If you want to set up an eCommerce store, the first question you need to answer is ‘which website platform will I use?’
And for many, the technical nitty gritty of finding the right platform for them – and then actually getting their website up and running so they can start selling – can cause massive overwhelm and delays.
Luckily these days building an eCommerce website is far easier than it was 10 years ago.
Once upon a time, you would have to spend upwards of $5,000, $10,000, even $20,000 to get a web developer to design and build your custom ecommerce website!
And obviously those prices create a HUGE barrier for entry for smaller business owners, who don’t have much start-up capital.
These days though, things are much simpler and easier, with fully hosted, fully functional platforms that allow for a much easier DIY route.
Whilst I’m not saying they are entirely easy or hassle free – they are certainly so much cheaper and straight forward to set up.
Right now, there are three main players in the new-world eCommerce marketplace, which will give you a really awesome eCommerce website:
- WooCommerce on WordPress
Yes there are heaps of other platforms out there, but these are the three that are the most common and tend to be the stand out winners.
Now, BigCommerce and Shopify are cloud based platforms, where you subscribe to their platform on a monthly basis. They provide plug-n-play templates to design your website, and also handle all the payment integrations, order processing and product/inventory management.
These systems have the advantage that you don’t necessarily require much technical knowledge, as the platform itself helps step you through the design and set up process.
WordPress & WooCommerce is fantastic, but a little different. It is considered one of the best options out there, but you do need to know how to use WordPress and its slightly more technical.
My Favourite eCommerce Platform…
Is BigCommerce! My husband and I have been operating our own online business, One Stop Horse Shop, for around 9 years, and we’ve had our website built on the BigCommerce platform since we started.
We’ve loved it so much my husband now has a second manufacturing business, and uses BigCommerce for this website too.
The BigCommerce platform has grown considerably since we first started with them and introduced so many great features and functionality. That’s the advantage of a cloud-based setup – as when they introduce new functionality, you get it instantly!
But I’ve also found it the easiest platform to use both in terms of DIY design, and your day-to-day inventory and order processing management.
Many other designers and online experts recommend Shopify. And yes – it’s meant to be great! Apparently its awesome for SEO and has lots of flexibility. Yet personally, I’ve played around with several Shopify websites and found it to be a tad frustrating to use in comparison to BigCommerce.
BigCommerce for me has always won in terms of sheer easiness!
The good thing is, that if you’re tossing up between BigCommerce and Shopify, you can trial both of them for FREE before making a decision.
You can do that for BigCommerce here >
If the tech stuff is driving you batty though, I’m always here to help! I can help by designing and setting up your BigCommerce store, including uploading products etc for a very affordable fee.
Or, I can help with any part of the process – such as setting up products, setting up payment integrations, or simply implementing a new templated design etc.
Hit me up if you need me ?
